Gin
Gin was the spirit of the cocktail hour, and its vintage advertising is inseparable from the martini—brand after brand competing to be the one gin worthy of the glass. Beefeater, Gordon's, Tanqueray, Booth's, and Gilbey's all made their case, some championing the martini, others the gin and tonic, and a few insisting theirs was smooth enough to sip straight. Above all they sold sophistication and British pedigree—the London Dry heritage, the Beefeater in his royal livery, the crisp promise that theirs was simply "the gin."
