Seiko was the outsider that rewrote the rules, and on December 25, 1969 it changed watchmaking forever with the Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch. Its advertising carried the confidence of a company that knew it had leapt ahead—captured in the now-legendary promise, "Someday all watches will be made this way." But the Seiko story runs deeper than quartz, taking in rugged automatic divers, the value-driven Seiko 5, and the automatic chronographs that arrived that same pivotal year. At the summit sits Grand Seiko, launched in 1960 to beat the Swiss at their own game—chronometer-grade precision and Zaratsu-polished finishing, sold almost exclusively in Japan for decades before reaching the wider world.
