Where Rolex sold adventure, Audemars Piguet sold something quieter and more exclusive: the watch you had to know about to appreciate. Founded in 1875 in the Vallée de Joux and long known for exquisite dress watches and grand complications, AP shocked the industry in 1972 with the Royal Oak—the Gérald Genta design that invented the luxury steel sports watch. The advertising matched the audacity. "The costliest stainless steel watch in the world," ran one campaign; "It takes more than money to wear a Royal Oak," went another. Taglines like "Known Only By Those Who Know" and "Some Things in Life Speak for Themselves" turned discretion itself into the pitch.
