Whiskey advertising was among the most refined commercial art of its day, all wood-paneled lounges, hunt clubs, and cocktail-hour glamour that sold the gentleman ideal as much as the pour. The taglines said it plainly—Lord Calvert "for men of distinction," Old Grand-Dad the self-styled "head of the bourbon family," Kentucky Tavern "the aristocrat of bonds."
